About the SC&R Foundation

The SC&R Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, provides support to the carrier, crane, rigging, and millwrighting industries by providing industry research, education and scholarships.

Since its inception, the Foundation has invested more than one-half million dollars to advance the work of the industry.

Research and Education

Research project topics are developed by governing committees comprised of Association members and SC&RA staff.

The 2008 research initiatives were:

  • An analysis and update of SC&RA's Pilot Car Escort: Best Practices Guidelines. Published in March, 2009, and;

  • A pilot car certification model for state agencies.   The project provides minimum quality requirements for states to implement a uniform competency-based certification program based upon the SC&RA's Pilot Car Escort: Best Practices Guidelines.

Past research projects that are available for purchase, have included the “Moving the World: No Other Industry Carries as Much Weight”, a video that serves as a useful tool for policy work and as a recruitment tool. Another video, “Recommend Practices for Telescopic Hydraulic Gantry Systems”, covers the covers the scope, construction, inspection, engineering, and operations of hydraulic gantries. Featured are demonstrations of equipment setup, and proper use and maintenance of the systems. This video is sold with the Recommended Practices for Telescopic Hydraulic Gantry Systems manual.

The Committee published an industry recruitment Career Brochure in spring 2009.

Board of Directors and Committees

The SC&R Foundation Board is composed of volunteers. In addition to the Board of Directors, the work of the Foundation is done primarily through three standing committees. The committees are open to all SC&RA members and meet annually during the SC&RA Annual Conference and the January Board and Committee Meetings.

  • The Development/Public Relations Committee is charged to develop specific plans to increase the SC&R Foundation net assets while continuing to fund the scholarship program and highly visible industry research. The committee is responsible for an ongoing publicity and promotion campaign to educate the SC&RA membership on the Foundation's mission, objectives, and successes.

  • The Education/Research Committee is charged to review proposed research projects and make recommendations to the SC&R Foundation Board for approval during its annual Board meeting. The committee is also charged to produce effective programs that will raise member awareness of the severity of the long-term industry labor shortage, identify educational opportunities, and provide appropriate materials for effectively introducing industry career opportunities to potential employees or students.

  • The Scholarship Committee is charged with growing and maintaining a scholarship/grant program that is valuable and useful to the industry and member firms.
