New Mexico Increases Weight Allowance on Trunnions

- In a positive example of cooperation and collaboration between states and industry, the New Mexico Department of Transportation has updated its weights/spacing allowance for 8 tire/10’ wide set up, creating a huge time and cost savings for industry companies.

“We are excited for future business through New Mexico and hopefully this is a start in formulating a national standard for trunnion acceptance,” said Michael Poppe, President, Precision Heavy Haul, Inc and leader of the SC&RA Trunnion Taskforce.  “Special thanks to Paul DeLong, Paul DeLong Heavy Haul, Ray Morgan, Perkins STC, and Ron Montgomery, IRH, for sticking together to make this happen.”  

Previously, New Mexico allowed 57,500 with a minimum of an 18’ spacing. The State had several requests from the heavy haul industry come through the Bridge office and Governor’s office and the 18’ spacing was then reduced to 14’. Carriers who followed the laws and regulations suffered a larger expense and permit expenses were higher because it was a ton-mile state. Carriers had to use more manpower to operate the dual lane equipment, and there was a larger expense for hiring more pilots or police escorts.  This was frustrating, as adjoining states would allow for trunnion weight/spacing.  

Finally, New Mexico DOT reviewed studies on trunnions and determined they have the same effect on infrastructure as a standard triple axle grouping. The state announced the change for the 60K and to the minimum required spacing to 12’ at the WASHTO 2019 Spring meeting, making moves through the state less costly and less time consuming.

“We are grateful to New Mexico DOT POE/Compliance Office Supervisor Leslie Sanchez and her staff for making things better for carriers and creating uniformity for the states, which is a huge goal for all of us,” Poppe said.
