About Us

The Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA) is an international trade association of more than 1,400 members from 46 nations. Our members are involved in specialized transportation, machinery moving and erecting, industrial maintenance, millwrighting and crane and rigging operations, manufacturing and rental.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: We advocate, educate and provide networking opportunities that help industry stakeholders operate safely, legally and profitably around the world.

We also help our members run more efficient and safer businesses by monitoring and affecting pending legislation and regulatory policies at the state and national levels. We do this by researching and reporting on safety concerns and best business practices, and by providing four yearly forums where these and other relevant member issues can be discussed and advanced.

Our Strategic Plan

Every five years, SC&RA focuses on top priorities to bring exceptional value to our members and the industry. As part of this Strategic Plan, the SC&RA Board identified six significant priorities and objectives:
  • Workforce Development: Strengthen the support and resources that equip members to address their workforce needs.
  • Advocacy: Clearly define advocacy goals and aggressively communicate its value.
  • Member Involvement: Increase member involvement with an emphasis on building a pipeline of new talent for volunteer leadership positions.
  • Technology: Capitalize on technology to engage members and expand the delivery of SC&RA programs and services.
  • Global Leadership:Strengthen SC&RA’s global leadership position.
  • Operation Objectives: Retool the dues structure to address the impact of M&A and market changes; Restructure the SC&RA insurance program; and Continue the quality of leadership and staff at SC&RA.

Our Structure

SC&RA is governed by a Board of Directors and four groups that each report to the Board regarding the work their group is doing. All board and committee members are volunteers from SC&RA member companies and bring valuable industry knowledge, including information on how regulatory decisions might impact member companies and current issues facing our members.

Each of the four groups has a Governing and Nominating Committee as well as other sub-committees as needed. Governing Committees are charged with identifying issues and recommending actions to benefit members of SC&RA as well as governing the actions of the committees within their respective groups.

Committees are all comprised of elected members from their respective industry sector.

Our Legacy

SC&RA was formed in 1947 as laws and regulations specifically affecting the transport of specialized loads started to change.

SC&RA began as a segment of the Local Cartage National Conference (LCNC) of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) in order to accommodate the segment of the transportation industry affected by these developments.

In December 1948, the Heavy Haulers, Machinery Movers and Erectors Section of LCNC was born. The new Heavy-Specialized Conference of the ATA held its first official meeting on December 6, at the Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C., with 75 people in attendance.

The conference continued to grow, attaining a membership total of 200 member companies by 1966, and 300 member companies by 1968, bringing together crane and rigging companies as well as transportation companies. In 1981, a new name was adopted: the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association.

By 1995, the Association crossed the 800-member mark. Today, the Association serves 1,400+ member companies in 46 nations involved in specialized transportation, machinery moving and erecting, industrial maintenance, millwrighting, crane and rigging operations, manufacturing and crane. SC&RA is dedicated to providing education, events, webinars, safety manuals, reference tools and advocacy on behalf of the industry.
