Major Victory for Mobile Cranes and Special Mobile Equipment
(August 18, 2021) - Working with our partners at the South Carolina Trucking Association (SCTA), SC&RA and the industry recently scored a major victory for special mobile equipment carriers/mobile cranes for companies operating in and through the state of South Carolina. In 2019, the state enacted a new Road User Fee for transportation. Though existing state law exempted mobile cranes from this tax, the state had nonetheless been collecting it via its IRP/IFTA collections.
As a result of a recent ruling by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, qualifying SME carriers who paid this tax may now be eligible for a refund. If you believe your company was incorrectly assessed the South Carolina RUF in your recent (2019-2021) IRP/IFTA payments to the state, you can write to MCSRUF@scdmv.net to request a refund. The DMV asks companies to please provide:
-
MC-4 Motor Carrier Refund Request indicating “RUF Refund for SME Apportioned Vehicle” for every year RUF was charged
- Invoices of any add, add with transfer, and renewed SME apportioned vehicles from August 2019 to the present
- Bill of sale/invoices
