Proclamation Provides Tariff Relief But SC&RA Asks: What about Tower Cranes & Crawlers?

-A new presidential proclamation signed June 1 provides welcome tariff relief for certain imported crane and specialized transport equipment beginning June 8. Under the revised Section 232 tariff framework, mobile cranes, self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), transporter modules, and certain heavy-duty semitrailers will benefit from reduced duties in specific circumstances, particularly for imports from the European Union and Japan. While this is a positive step for portions of the industry, significant challenges remain. The tariff reductions do not apply to crawler cranes or tower cranes. In addition, tariffs continue to increase costs for critical materials used in manufacturing. SC&RA is actively working with trade counsel and lobbyists in Washington, D.C., to secure expanded relief for crawler cranes and tower cranes and to eliminate tariffs on the high-tensile steel U.S. manufacturers rely on to build cranes and trailers. These efforts are aimed at reducing costs, improving competitiveness, and strengthening domestic manufacturing. Questions? Contact Joel Dandrea.
