SC&RA Takes Advocacy on the Road

- SC&RA’s On the Road regional meetings in Philadelphia and Boston drew strong participation from crane, rigging, and specialized transportation professionals eager to discuss the issues affecting their businesses. Across both events, attendees engaged in conversations on oversized load permitting challenges, including the need for more consistent and efficient processes and expanded access to blanket permits at the super-load level. Members also shared concerns about the ongoing impact of tariffs on equipment availability, pricing, and business planning. Specialty crane operations emerged as another key topic, with participants highlighting the need for regulations, safety standards, and jobsite requirements that better reflect the realities of self-erecting tower cranes. In Boston, SC&RA lobbyist, Mark Malloy, updated members on the Association’s fight against the costly and outdated 130,000-pound superload policy—the most restrictive in the region. This archaic threshold forces unnecessary engineering reviews, costly bridge surveys, and delays that inflate project expenses, hinder economic efficiency, and put Massachusetts at a competitive disadvantage compared to neighboring states. Overall, members brought forward additional local and regional issues, giving SC&RA valuable insight into the challenges companies are facing on the ground and a clear direction for future advocacy efforts.
