SC&RA’s Smith in Montreal to Discuss Harmonization

- This week the Task Force on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions Policy, the gathering of trucking regulatory and permitting officials across all Canadian provinces and territories, hosted its annual meeting in Montreal. The Task Force reports to the Council of Deputy Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety. The organization expanded this year’s conference to two days, dedicating an entire day to oversize/overweight specialized transportation, crane, and rigging issues. On the agenda was discussion of Canadian permit harmonization for signage, lighting, flags, etc., for oversized vehicles, and escort vehicle driver qualifications, specification, signing and lighting.

SC&RA V.P. Transportation Chris Smith attended and spoke on behalf of the Association, encouraging Canadian provincial officials to mirror AASHTO backed recommendations. Other key agenda items included: Escort vehicle driver training/certification; Daylight vs night-time operations; construction zones minimum lane width; Permit delivery service standards; and Permit application information.
