SC&RA Monitoring Permitting Routes After Baltimore Bridge Collapse 

(March 28, 2024) - SC&RA continues to monitor the catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695) in Baltimore, Maryland. At this time, the Maryland State Highway Administration is directing all permit holders to check your permit and route. Any permit using this route will need to be rerouted through the Maryland One permit system. Email (haulingpermits@mdot.maryland.gov) or call their office for assistance, 1-800-543-4564. As of press time, I-695 Outer Loop is closed at MD 173 (exit 1) and Inner Loop is closed at MD 157/Peninsula Expressway (exit 43). Harbor Crossings alternate routes will be I-95 or I-895 tunnels. Vehicles transporting hazardous materials prohibited in tunnels should use the western section of I-695 around tunnels. This includes vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials. The Port of Baltimore is still open for truck transactions. Vessel (waterway) traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice.

The Port of Baltimore is one of the largest breakbulk and project cargo facilities on the Atlantic Seaboard, making it a crucial operational center for many SC&RA members and their operators. While the long-term impact of the loss of this section of I-695 is still to be determined, it will undoubtedly affect industrial operations and routing in the weeks, months and years to come.  SC&RA will continue to provide updates from our partners at the Maryland State Highway Administration and SC&RA member, Maryland Port Administration, as we receive them.
