Mobile Crane Travel Gets Huge Boost with Illinois Revised Divisible Load Policy

The Illinois Department of Transportation, as a result of SC&RA advocacy, revised its policy for oversize/overweight permit eligibility, providing significant positive changes to mobile crane travel. Notable points in the revised policy:

  • Clarification and consistency: Standardization of enforcement throughout various jurisdictions for equipment providers moving cranes and heavy equipment both self-propelled and on trailers, especially when moving interstate.
  • Common sense: Guidelines that allow machines to be moved in a configuration whereas they are functional for their intended purpose upon arrival.

  • Safety: Ability to safely transport machines with the necessary components in place, as intended by manufacturer, for balanced axle weights and loading for improved steering and braking.
IDOT revised the policy in part based upon SC&RA’s successful outreach to FMCSA for a clarification of the federal definition of a “non-divisible” load.
