SC&RA is committed to supporting mental health awareness throughout the industry. Currently there are between 8 and 12 million people employed in the U.S. construction industry.* Around 90 percent of them are men. And around 83 percent of them have struggled with mental health issues. On the trucking side, a 2023 survey** revealed that 46 percent of respondents indicated access to mental health services would be an effective way to help them manage stress – with 40 percent of male drivers and 58 percent of female drivers acknowledging they’d consider speaking with a counselor or therapist about their emotions.

This industry is high-stress and physically demanding – often perceived as a “tough-guy” profession where individuals feel like they have to hide injuries, emotions, and anxiety. As a result, depression and/or substance abuse is commonplace, and worse, the construction industry ranks second among all industries in suicide rate.***

Recognizing that many people in this industry hesitate to seek help due to the stigma surrounding mental health and the perception that seeking help is a sign of weakness, SC&RA is providing this page as a resource to individuals and companies grappling with this issue or who are in a position to support those who are going through a mental health crisis.
